Celebration of the Word: Prayer and Liturgy
Prayer and Liturgy at St Pius X Catholic Primary School
I would like to help us to rekindle our wonder for the beauty of the truth of the Christian celebration, to remind us of the necessity of an authentic liturgical formation, and to recognise the importance of an art of celebrating that is at the service of the truth of the Paschal Mystery and of the participation of all of the baptised in it, each one according to his or her vocation.

Annual Plan of Provision for Prayer and Liturgy at St Pius X
Prayer and Liturgy is part of our daily life at St Pius X Catholic Primary School. As quoted above, Pope Francis invites us to be caught up in wonder and awe at the great gift which is offered by God and received by those who pray and worship through liturgy. We are passionate about our children embracing this gift from God and use guidance from The Prayer and Liturgy Directory: To love You more dearly, to support our children to develop their relationship with God.
Prayer and liturgy at St Pius X Catholic Primary School is always founded on scripture. Each week, we delve into the weekly gospel and encourage the children to reflect and think about it in a deep and meaningful way.
Prayer and liturgy throughout the week at St Pius X:
Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday |
Class Celebration of the Word | Whole School Liturgy | Wednesday Word Liturgy | Whole School Liturgical Music Practice | Whole School Celebration Assembly |
Please find our prayer and liturgy schedule for the Autumn Term here. We have dedicated weeks that are linked to our school values, where children are able to explore how the value relates to scripture more deeply and what they can do to embody it through Catholic Social Teaching.
There is a long tradition of Christians learning prayers and phrases of scripture by memory that they can call upon when needed. We speak about learning prayers 'by heart' so that they can spring from the heart. At St Pius X, we provide pupils with a student prayer book that they can use to support them to learn the prayers, but also to have a place to turn to express in prayer the hopes and fears of growing in life and faith.
Please find an example of the children's prayer book here, which details the different prayers that they will learn in each year group.

Rosary Club
Every week, our children have the opportunity to praise and worship God through our Rosary Club. The children love to learn how to use the Rosary to pray and how it can bring them even closer to God.
Year 6 Leavers' Mass 2024
On Tuesday 16th July, we celebrated the Year 6 Mass and Leavers' Assembly, a significant milestone for our departing pupils. The day commenced with a special Mass, led by Father Paul, which featured pupils celebrating their time at St Pius X by leading in prayer and song.
Palm Sunday Parade in Reception
We have been exploring Holy Week. To learn about Palm Sunday the children made palm leaves and tried to write praise phrases on them such as 'Hosanna' and 'Jesus is the best'.
We then reenacted the Palm Sunday scene with children waving their palm leaves and shouting praises to Jesus, this has helped us with our recall of the story. We also learned the hymn 'Sing Hosanna' and sang this as part of our role play lesson. The children showed brilliant Reciprocity, one of our learning powers, working together to create the scene!
