‘Together in God’s loving family, we believe, we learn, we grow.’
Below is an outline of how DT is taught at our school.
DT in Year 5: Building Bridges
We have been studying bridges, exploring how to strengthen them and make them stable. We worked in small groups to design our own bridge. This week we started to make our bridges, using handsaws to cut the wood, and the gluegun to stick the structure together. Look out for the finished masterpieces...
The Great Year 5 Bake Off!
After learning about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet (using the Eat Well plate guidance), pupils were given the opportunity to try different flavoured breads at our tasting café. Pupils then evaluated each bread and this market research allowed them to consider what flavours and ingredients they might use in their own bread recipe. Ingredients included olives, pumpkin seeds, cheese, lemon zest, poppy seeds, cherries, apricots, and many more!
We made links with literacy, sharing ideas about what makes a good set of instructions, before writing recipes. Five recipes were chosen to be created, with the help of our caterer Mrs Hughes, and the pupils worked in teams. Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry even made an appearance!
