‘Together in God’s loving family, we believe, we learn, we grow.’
At St Pius X we strive to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to become a confident and successful reader and writer, who develops a love of literacy. We teach a rigorous, explicit, systematic synthetic phonics programme. The children learn to blend for reading and to segment for spelling. Handwriting is taught alongside phonics.
· Provide consistent high-quality phonics teaching that allows all children to develop a strong foundation upon which they can secure the reading and writing process
· Ensure that the teaching of synthetic phonics is rigorous, systematic and progressive throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2 as appropriate
· Ensure that the children have a secure knowledge in phonics, the understanding and skills to be able to decode, segment and blend confidently
At St Pius X we use the OUP Floppy Phonics Scheme. The scheme provides clear information and guidance on content and progression, planning, teaching and learning routines. There are a variety of resources including IWB activities, activity sheets, display materials and reading books.
The teaching sequence is 1. Revisit and review 2. Teach. 3. Practise. 4. Apply 5. Consolidate. 7. Further Practise.
