Intent:

The 2014 National Curriculum for Computing aims to ensure that all children:

• Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation  
• Can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems  
• Can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems  
• Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

At St Pius X our vision is to provide a high-quality computing education that equips pupils to use their skills and creativity to understand and change the world.

We believe that Computing strongly links to other areas of the curriculum, including, Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities and Arts, and that all children should leave St Pius X being able to actively participate in the digital world.

Implementation:

We deliver the Teach Computing Curriculum at St Pius X, which has been created by the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE).  It is built to enable pupils to gain the relevant and varied skills through a balance of:

• Computer Science, in which children are taught the principles of information and computing.
• Information Technology, in which children are equipped with the skills to create programs, systems and related content.
• Digital Literacy, in which children are given the opportunities to express themselves and develop their ideas.
• Online Safety, in which children are taught how to analyse content, conduct themselves in a suitable manner and use safe contact guidelines.

Impact:

Children across St Pius X thoroughly enjoy computing sessions and are particularly knowledgeable and confident to discuss online safety. Underpinned by our core values at St Pius X, the computing curriculum develops children's understanding on the importance of demonstrating kindness, integrity and fairness online. Computing lessons across the school are fully engaging and allow opportunities or children to work collaboratively and independently to develop their skills.
