Geography
Intent:
At St Pius X, we believe that geography inspires interest and fascination in children. We aim to develop their curiosity in both their immediate surroundings and the wider world around them; celebrating diverse cultures. Through high quality and purposeful teaching, our aim is to instil a desire to investigate a variety of human and physical features in our world, both local and from afar. We believe that through celebrating the differences between places and how their cultures have changed over time, we can foster a classroom of well rounded citizens for the future. We aim for our children to be inquisitive, to ask questions and to develop in wonder and admiration about the wider world around them. These skills will be developed both inside and outside of the classroom with local fieldwork and trips.
Implementation:
Through the delivery of our International Primary Curriculum we ensure that all children feel confident with locational knowledge, place knowledge, physical geography, human geography and geographical skills and fieldwork. We are passionate about children understanding not only the local geographical area, but also where it fits in the wider, global community. The international goals within our curriculum enable children to deepen their understanding of global geographical diversity as well as being able to explore how locations around the world are changing.
Progression of Geographical Skills and Knowledge
Impact:
Our pupils enjoy developing their geographical knowledge and skills through the range of opportunities our curriculum provides. From EYFS, children develop a keen interest in the world around them and enjoy deepening their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Moreover, as our geography curriculum at St Pius X is grounded in one of our core values, service, our pupils leave understanding their role as global citizens. Throughout their time at St Pius X, they consider the positive impact that they can have on the Earth, and leave with a clear view on how to help protect our planet.
