Art & Design
Intent:
The 2014 National Curriculum for art aims to ensure that all children:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
At St Pius X we strive to deliver high quality learning experiences for all pupils to enable progression and mastery in Art. Pupils will have opportunities to experience Art in a range of contexts, including involvement in local community projects and visits to local workshops and more prestigious galleries. Through hands-on, engaging and purposeful learning opportunities, children will feel confident and equipped with the knowledge and skills to express themselves creatively, whilst becoming critical thinkers. They will have a strong understanding of how art and design impacts and influences our culture and society and feel inspired to take ownership of their personal creative progression.
Implementation:
At St Pius X, we are passionate about providing our pupils with as many opportunities as possible to develop as artists. Lessons are planned in small steps so that pupils can effectively master specific artistic skills as they progress from EYFS to Year 6.
As children become more proficient within the discipline, they are challenged to invent and create their own works of art, and think critically to develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. Linking art lessons to our school values, the children learn how art can both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Progression of Skills in Art and Design
Impact:
The pupils at St Pius X thoroughly enjoy their art and design lessons. Throughout the school, it is clear that the learning environment is a safe, supportive space where the children are able to take creative risks in their artwork. From Early Years through to Year 6, children are passionate about designing, creating, evaluating and then finally displaying their pieces of art.
The children's work is celebrated in an annual exhibition where our school hall opens to parents and carers and transforms into an art gallery for the evening.
